FAQ

How much notice must a Section 13 rent increase give? At least 1 month for weekly/monthly tenancies, or 6 months for yearly tenancies. It cannot take effect until at least 12 months after the last increase or the start of the tenancy. See gov.uk/private-renting/rent-increases.

Can the tenant challenge the increase? Yes. Tenants can apply to the First-tier Tribunal (Property Chamber) before the new rent takes effect. The Tribunal decides an open-market rent, which can be lower, the same, or (currently) higher than proposed.
